Israeli troops 'using excessive force' in West Bank

Israeli forces are using excessive and reckless force in the occupied West Bank, Amnesty International says.

More than 40 Palestinians were killed in the past three years and the rate of killings rose significantly in 2013, a report by the human rights group says.

It alleges that Israel is allowing its soldiers to act with virtual impunity.
Israel said Amnesty had ignored an increase in Palestinian violence and showed a complete lack of understanding of its operational challenges.

'Needless loss of life'

Amnesty International's report, entitled Trigger Happy, says there has been mounting bloodshed and human rights in the West Bank since January 2011 as a result of the use of "unnecessary, arbitrary and brutal force against Palestinians" by Israeli soldiers and police.

According to the UN, 27 West Bank Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces last year, nine more than the totals in 2011 and 2012 combined.

Nine Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were reportedly killed by Israeli forces in 2013, while Palestinians killed three Israeli civilians and three Israeli security forces personnel in Israel and the West Bank.

Amnesty documented the killings of 22 Palestinian civilians in the West Bank last year, of which it said at least 14 were connected to protests. In all of the cases, those killed did not appear to have posed a direct and immediate threat to life, it said.

"Several victims were shot in the back suggesting that they were targeted as they tried to flee and posed no genuine threat to the lives of members of Israeli forces or others," the report said. "In several cases, well-armoured Israeli forces have resorted to lethal means to crack down on stone-throwing protesters causing needless loss of life."

"There is evidence that some individuals were victims of wilful killings, which would amount to war crimes."

A further 261 West Bank Palestinians, including 67 children, have been seriously injured by live ammunition fired by Israeli forces in the past three years, according to Amnesty. Some 8,500 others, including 1,500 children, have been shot and seriously wounded by other means, including rubber-coated metal bullets and tear-gas canisters, it says.
The report also accuses the Israeli authorities of failing to publish the findings of investigations into a number of suspected unlawful killings.

Enzo Zidane plays for France

'Zidane is back!' The headline, published in Monday's Le Parisien, refers not to World Cup hero Zinedine Zidane, but to his 18-year-old son, Enzo.

The Spanish-French national has been called up to join France’s Under-19 training camp.
“The player has decided to wear the blue jersey”, France youth coach Willy Sagnol told Le Parisien. “He may yet change his mind, but at the moment he wants to play for France.”
Enzo Zidane, who is also known as Enzo Fernandez after his mother's maiden name, has long been torn between Spain and France.
He was born in France in 1995 but soon followed his father to Madrid, where he currently plays for Real Madrid’s youth team.
He obtained Spanish citizenship in 2006 and was called up to the Spain Under-15 team in 2009.
A midfielder like his father, Enzo Zidane is also eligible to play for his paternal grandparents’ home country, Algeria.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Source:French daily

Chelsea draw 1-1 with Galatasaray in Champions League

Chelsea held on for a 1-1 draw with Turkish football team Galatasaray in Istanbul Wednesday, giving the London club the upper hand after the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

The visitors led at half-time thanks to an early goal from Fernando Torres, but Galatasaray improved in the second half and restored parity after the hour mark when Cameroon defender Aurélien Chedjou found the net.

A draw was a fair reflection of the way the game went, but Chelsea will now hope to finish the job in the return at Stamford Bridge on March 18.

It was a sixth goal in his last five Champions League starts for Torres, and it briefly silenced the Turkish fans inside the impressive Turk Telecom Arena.

Chelsea could possibly have put the tie to bed in the minutes that followed, with Galatasaray utterly disorganised and poor in possession.

There was little by means of a response from Roberto Mancini's men, with Didier Drogba unable to wriggle free from the marking of John Terry and Wesley Sneijder incapable of influencing proceedings from the left flank.

Winger Izet Hajrovic saw his snap-shot from 20 yards saved by Petr Cech, but the recent signing from Swiss side Grasshoppers was then the victim of a tactical switch by Mancini, who sent on central midfielder Yekta Kurtulus in his place and changed to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Gala improved after that and an Alex Telles cross-cum-shot had Petr Cech panicked before Burak Yilmaz put the ball in the net after a quickly-taken throw, but with an extra ball on the pitch at the time, the Spanish referee disallowed the goal, and booked Chelsea skipper John Terry for throwing one ball away.

A lively Torres almost made it 2-0 for Chelsea in the 52nd minute, bursting through the middle of the home back line before seeing his shot turned behind for a corner by Muslera.
However, Galatasaray finally started to grow into the contest in the second half, the raucous crowd receiving a lift when Gary Cahill nearly turned the ball into his own net after intercepting a Burak Yilmaz pass intended for Drogba.

The Ivorian striker almost created an equaliser against his old club in the 62nd minute, heading down a left-wing cross for Selcuk Inan, but the home captain somehow contrived to stab the ball against the post from a yard out.

The Turkish champions were not to be denied a leveller three minutes later, though, Chedjou wriggling free of his marker to convert a Sneijder corner from point-blank range.
Galatasaray finished strongly, although the closest they came to winning the game was from a fierce Telles shot that Cech tipped over.

In the night’s other Champions League tie, Real Madrid cruised to a rare victory on German soil as they romped to a 6-1 win at Schalke.
Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo all scored twice each, while Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored a 91st-minute consolation for Schalke.

Turkey’s President Erdogan implicated in second leaked recording

A damaging new audio recording claiming to capture the voice of Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was posted to YouTube on Wednesday by an anonymous user who goes by the pseudonym Haramzadeler.

In the recording, a voice identified by Haramzadeler as Erdogan’s is heard advising his son not to accept a business deal, but to hold out for more money instead.

“Don’t take it. Whatever he has promised us, he should bring this. If he is not going to bring that, there is no need,” Erdogan allegedly says in the audio. “The others are bringing. Why can’t he bring? What do they think this business is? ... But don’t worry they will fall into our lap.”

It is the second such post to appear on YouTube since Monday. In the first, the prime minister is recorded allegedly telling his son Bilal to get rid of large sums of cash amid a graft investigation. Erdogan refuted the audio’s authenticity, claiming it was faked by his political enemies.

Neither recording has yet been verified.

“We are going to check whether the tapes are fake or not and no statement is planned at the moment,” a senior government official told the Reuters news agency.

The recordings, which appeared within days of the ruling AK Party’s official launch of a campaign for local elections at the end of March, are the latest and potentially most damaging allegations in a graft scandal that Erdogan has said was designed to unseat him.
